About: 

Nicholas Hammond specialises in seventeenth-century French thought, drama, poetry and culture.

He is the author of听Playing with truth: language and the human condition in Pascal's 笔别苍蝉茅别蝉听(OUP, 1994);听Creative Tensions: an introduction to seventeenth-century French Literature听(Duckworth, 1997);听听Fragmentary Voices: memory and education at Port-Royal听(Biblio 17, 2004); and听Gossip, Sexuality and Scandal in France (1610-1715)听(Peter Lang, 2011). He is also the editor of听D'Aubignac's Quatre Dissertations contre Corneille听(1996); the听澳门六合彩开奖记录 Companion to Pascal听(2003); and of the Duckworth series听New Readings: introductions to European literature and culture. He is co-editor, with Bill Burgwinkle and Emma Wilson, of听The 澳门六合彩开奖记录 History of French Literature听(2011), and, with Michael Moriarty, of听Evocations of Eloquence: Rhetoric, Literature and Religion in early modern France听(Peter Lang, 2012). He produced also a scholarly edition of the complete poetry of Denis Sanguin de Saint-Pavin (Classiques Garnier, 2012). His most recent books are听Racine's Andromaque: absences and displacements, co-edited with Joseph Harris (Brill, 2019), a monograph,听The Powers of Sound and Song in Early Modern Paris (Penn State University Press, 2019), and, co-edited with Paul Hammond, Racine鈥檚 Roman Tragedies: essays on 鈥淏ritannicus鈥 and 鈥淏茅r茅nice鈥 (Brill, 2022).

He is the director of a project on 17th-century Parisian soundscapes, and the project's website,听, is devoted to transcriptions and performances of street songs.

Professor听Hammond welcomes inquiries from potential MPhil and PhD students听with research interests relevant to his听interests.

  • Gender and sexuality studies, poetry, prose (especially women writers S茅vign茅 and Lafayette)

Sound in theatre, the theatre of Jean Racine, Gossip, sound worlds (see www.parisiansoundscapes.org), libertin poetry.
