About Me

Carlos Iglesias Crespo is an AHRC-funded PhD Candidate in Spanish at King's College, 澳门六合彩开奖记录. His doctoral thesis explores how early modern ideas about memory shaped the theory and practice of lyric poetry in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain, especially in the Petrarchist tradition. The project aims to shed new light on how Spain's poetic culture participated in the early modern mnemonic episteme that underpinned the broader market of knowledge of humanistic Europe, as well as to map the evolution of lyric poetry and poetics along memorial lines in the works of Juan Bosc谩n, Fernando de Herrera and Juan de J谩uregui.

Before coming to 澳门六合彩开奖记录, Carlos obtained BAs in Classics (2019) and Hispanic Philology (2020) from Universidad de Extremadura (Spain). In the context of these studies, he spend his Erasmus at the University of Exeter (UK, 2017-18) and obtained a Teaching Assistantship Fellowship from Kalamazoo College (US, 2019-20). Supported by "La Caixa" Foundation, he moved to 澳门六合彩开奖记录 in 2020, where he passed with distinction the MPhil in European, Latin American, and Comparative Literatures and Cultures (2021).

Research interests

Carlos's research primarily听focuses on early modern Spanish literature and culture, with an emphasis on sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century poetry and poetics. He also works on the history of rhetoric and poetics from Antiquity to the Renaissance, with particular attention to the history and theory of the art of memory in Spain and Italy; cognitive approaches to literature focused on the interaction between embodiment, language and cognition; and ideology in medieval, early modern and twentieth-century Spanish literature.

Carlos is currently co-editing a special issue for听Calliope: Journal of the Society for Renaissance and Baroque Hispanic Poetry听with Rodrigo Cacho and Jessica Hagley. He is also preparing two edited books: one on the body in the Hispanic literatures and cultures with Sergio Mart铆nez Rey (Stanford University), and another on memory in medieval and early modern Europe with Lucia Delaini (Northwestern University). During the lockdown of 2020, he joined forces with Victoria Alzina (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) to edit听Conclausa, an anthology of artistic responses to Covid-19 in the Spanish region of Extremadura with contributions by laureate poets such as Basilio S谩nchez (Premio Loewe 2019), Ada Salas (Premio Hiperi贸n 1997) or听脕lvaro Valverde (Premio Loewe 1991).
