The Spanish and Portuguese Section very much welcomes PhD students.ÌýWe are one of the largest Hispanic and Lusophone departments in the UK, and one of the most highly ranked departments for research.Ìý

°Õ³ó±ðÌýmembers of our SectionÌýspecialiseÌýinÌýa broad variety of topics andÌýareas of research. They are someÌýof the leading experts in topics such as Medieval studies, Golden Age, Modern Peninsular, Latin American, Catalan culture, Hispanic Linguistics, Lusophone literature and art. Between them they have offered supervision in research for the PhD on an exciting range of topics, and welcome enquiries from potential research students.

Student response to our programme has been enthusiastic throughout the years and we have provided a unique training to support the personal and academic development of many young scholars who are currently holding academic jobs in different centres in the UK and abroad.Ìý

Information on applications, entry requirements and funding can be found here.

The requirement for admission to any graduate course is a goodÌýhonoursÌýdegree in Spanish or Portuguese or Modern Languages. The standard normally required is that of a first class or high 2.1 degree, or its equivalent. It is also expected that all candidates for a PhDÌýwill have achieved a distinction in a masters degree by the time they begin the doctorate.

Applicants for the PhDÌýwill be called for interview by members of the Department in the Lent (Spring) Term of the year in which they wish to begin their studies. The interview will seek to establish the suitability of the candidate in relation to our resources and specialist interests.

Postgraduates here enjoy the facilities of one of the most important University Libraries of the country. In addition to this, it should be noted that there are severalÌýfunding opportunitiesÌýto support their research, both through the University and the Colleges:

  • AHRC-funded Studentships
  • Gibson Fund ScholarshipÌý(up to £3,000)
  • JB Trend Travel FundÌý(travel grants)
