Crimea: Centre of Gravity in the Black Sea

In 2014 Ukraine鈥檚 Autonomous Republic of Crimea dominated headlines around the world. Since then it has largely receded from view 鈥 despite an ongoing Russian military build-up on the peninsula and crackdowns on Crimean Tatar civil society.

On 21 April 2017 the international workshop听鈥楥rimea: Centre of Gravity in the Black Sea鈥櫶returns the peninsula and its environs to the听centre听of attention.

The event is an exciting collaboration between Black Sea Networks, a research project at Columbia University led by Professor Valentina听Izmirlieva, and 澳门六合彩开奖记录 Ukrainian Studies, an academic听centre听in the Department of Slavonic Studies at the 澳门六合彩开奖记录.

鈥極ur aim is to contest a 鈥減eripheralisation鈥 of Crimea in Ukrainian, Russian and Turkish Studies and beyond鈥, said Dr Rory听Finnin, Director of the 澳门六合彩开奖记录 Ukrainian Studies听programme听and Head of the Department of Slavonic Studies at the 澳门六合彩开奖记录. 鈥楻econceptualising Crimea as a dynamic nexus 鈥 of peoples, historical traditions, political interests 鈥 will enrich our scholarly approaches to and听geostrategic听analyses听of the Black Sea region as a whole.鈥

The interdisciplinary workshop will feature two panel discussions and a collective roundtable exchange, which will be chaired by听Finnin听and听Izmirlieva. The presentations will address a wide range of topics, from the contemporary dynamics of Islam in Crimea to the identity work of pro-Russian nationalist groups prior to the annexation. Panelists include Idil听Izmirli,听Hakan听Kirimli, Eleanor Knott,听Sait听Ocakli, Sophie听Pinkham,听Vsevolod听Samokhvalov, and Olga听Zeveleva.

The event will be held in the historic听Pitt Building in the heart of the 澳门六合彩开奖记录 on 21 April 2017 from听10am听to 5:30pm. It is free and open to the public, but听听is required.听
