Sense of Place Departmental Lecture Series - Lent Term 2016

We are excited to launch back into our Departmental Lecture Series, 鈥楢 Sense of Place鈥, this Thursday and Friday 14-15 January when we will be welcoming scholar and poet Polina Barskova for a double header: not only will she speak to us about visual and textual works created in Leningrad during the siege of 1941-44, but she will also read her poetry the following day.

Record Enrollment for Open Classes in Polish

The innovative course in Polish Studies offered by the Department of Slavonic Studies is among the most popular in the entire Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages at the 澳门六合彩开奖记录. 'A Sense of Place' Public Lecture Series Begins on 15 October

Over the past decade the Department of Slavonic Studies has hosted a regular lecture series exploring a selected theme in Russian and East European Studies: Consumer Culture, National Identity, Display, Resistance. On Thursday 15 October we initiate our newest thematic lecture series: 'A Sense of Place'. Lilya Kaganovsky (University of Illinois) will give the inaugural talk of the series, entitled 鈥淭he Arctic in the Russian Imagination鈥, on Thursday 15 October, at the Umney Theatre in Robinson College at 5:30pm. All welcome!

The Department of Slavonic Studies organises a vibrant and dynamic series of free, public events in Polish, Russian and Ukrainian Studies every year. The 2015-16 events season was formally launched with a sold-out public lecture by Professor Sheila Fitzpatrick at Trinity College鈥檚 Winstanley Theatre on 9 October 2015.

Head of Department Dr Rory Finnin Wins Teaching Award

Dr Rory Finnin, University Senior Lecturer in Ukrainian Studies and Head of the Department of Slavonic Studies, won an award in the Lecturer category at the 2015 Teaching Awards organised by the 澳门六合彩开奖记录 University Student Union (CUSU). In 2015 the CUSU Student-Led Teaching Awards saw 265 nominations from students who submitted testimonies about why their chosen member of staff deserved to win. The winners, who were judged by a panel of students working alongside CUSU, were presented with their awards at a ceremony in the Old Schools on Tuesday, 12 May.

Postgrad Daria Mattingly Wins Best Doctoral Paper Prize at 2015 ASN Convention

Daria Mattingly, a PhD candidate in the Department of Slavonic Studies working with supervisor Dr Rory Finnin, has won an award for the Best Doctoral Paper on Ukraine at the 2015 Association for the Study of Nationalities Convention in New York City. Her paper was entitled 鈥樷淚dle, Drunk and Good for Nothing鈥: The Cultural Memory of the Holodomor Rank-and-File Perpetrator鈥. Congratulations, Daria!
